You are a Police Officer in America

By: Robert A. Bianchi, Esq., Morris County Prosecutor (2007-2013)

You are a Police Officer in the greatest Nation in the world.

You are Guardian.
You are a Police Officer in America.

You proudly serve this Nation where democracy flourishes under your protection, and even protect the rights of those that protest against you and your fellow officers.

You are Integrity.
You are a Police Officer in America.

When the buildings burn, or gunshots ring out, or the baby is sick, or the elderly need care, you run to help regardless of danger to your own life. You even protect your critics and those that abuse you.

You are Honor.
You are a Police Officer in America.

You have been yelled at, disrespected, spit upon, insulted, dehumanized, injured, and some of your fellow officers have been killed for the privilege of service. Yet you still serve.

You are Dedication.
You are a Police Officer in America.

You may be killed by a dangerous criminal, a car that explodes as you try to rescue a person, or a person that may seek revenge upon you for doing your job. You may be assassinated sitting in your police car by a deranged person fueled by pandering rhetoric from people who were supposed to support you.

Yet, you protect those that revile everything you stand for and have hope that someday the critics will understand who you really are.

You are Hope.
You are a Police Officer in America.

Enshrined upon the walls of cemeteries across the Nation are the names of fallen officers and those that have paid the price for their gallant service with their blood, bruises, trammeled emotions, and their lives. You put fear aside knowing that death is only the next moment away and that one day your name may be on that wall.

You are Courage.
You are a Police Officer in America.

You are the sons and daughters of loving parents; this Nation’s husbands and wives; the mothers and fathers of children, all who fear for your safety as you go to work to make a living.

You are Love.
You are a Police Officer in America.

You are a Police Officer in America without stint or reservation, loving this land as only one who understands history, its agonies, and its triumphs can love it and serve it.

Your contributions to this Nation are not any less nor your role not as worthy as that of any other American.

You stand in support of this nation’s freedom and promise against all foes.

Your have honorably dedicated yourself to the protection of this Nation.

You are proud of your profession and we are proud knowing that you shall remain worthy of it.

You are a Police Officer in America.
