The Bianchi Law Group is proud to announce that New Jersey Lawyer and Bianchi Law Group partner David J. Bruno, Esq. has been certified by the National College for DUI Defense and the Impaired Driving Specialists in DWI Detection and Standardized Field Sobriety Testing (SFST), a 24-hour practitioner course recognized by the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA).

The course is designed for defense attorneys who handle DWI and DUI cases and choose to educate themselves with the latest training and information.

The SFST Practitioner Course allows lawyers to understand the training law enforcement officers go through regarding how to administer and critique the Standard Field Sobriety Tests. Attorneys are instructed in how law enforcement officers are trained to administer and interpret the Horizontal Gaze Nystagmus (HGN), Walk and Turn, and One Leg Stand field sobriety tests.

During the training, attorneys must pass a written test and a practical proficiency test in front of instructors to prove command of the Standard Field Sobriety Tests. Attorneys must also complete two live workshops where they administer the Standard Field Sobriety Tests to volunteers with blood alcohol contents ranging from 0.00 to 0.15 to observe and learn the proper clues to determine if the volunteers were intoxicated.

The training is an in-depth, 24-hour NHTSA DWI/SFST course which is the same course required by police officers to administer the tests to the public as part DWI arrests in New Jersey. The course criteria included lesson plans utilizing the most recent DWI Detection and Standardized Field Sobriety Testing Participant Manual which included the following chapters;

  • Overview of Detection, Note taking, and Testimony
  • Phase One: Vehicle in motion
  • Phase Two: Personal Contact
  • Concepts and Principles of the Standardized Field Sobriety Tests (SFST)
  • Test Battery Demonstrations
  • Processing the Arrested Subject, Report Writing, and Preparation for Trial.
